Thank you, that list really got me over the hump. I also discovered the three different styles.css which are recursively called from the webapp/examples/compact-painter and the semi hidden default.css pulled down from http://simile.mit.edu . I guess css is a heaping technology. Just keep heaping shovels of stuff on top of other stuff and try to forget what you put on the bottom.
Another question. How can I put a tiling image in the timeline ether background?
