Hi all,
Looks like I am shortly going to court (Small claims or
Superior or both is yet to be determined) to sue some spammers. We
shall soon see how California's anti-spam law 17538.45 ($50/message,
ISP action only) carries some teeth. I will doubtless be needing to
demonstrate to the Judge/Jury SIMS -- with its customizable SMTP
banners and its detailed logs that can show the "NO UCE" banner going
out each time to the spammer's machines. (Thanks again Stalker
Software for the tremendous support!)

I have two different mail servers which handle the majority
of email for various domains and thus two different sets of logs. It
seems it would be real handy if I could run two instances of SIMS on
my laptop, listening to two different http ports so I could use the
built in log filter functions to bring up the log entry for any
arbitrary spam message on either server. Yes, I could open the
particular log file in a text editor but messages often overlap and
thus are confusing to follow through an unfiltered on a log.

I'd like to be able to do something like this on a powerbook running
a browser and two copies of SIMS:
http://127.0.0.1:8010 (for mail server 1's logs)
http://127.0.0.1:8080 (for mail server 2's logs)

Is this possible? I confess I don't know how one copy of an
application knows another is running. I also don't know how to get
one SIMS to look somewhere other than the System Folder for its email
folder.

Any suggestions on other ways to go about this?

On a different and slightly off topic note, would anyone
happen to have "non-technical" diagram (best) or summary of the
course of events during session between SMTP servers? I will need to
make one to put on a poster board for court to explain the whole
conversation that two SMTP servers have during the course of any
email transmission. The goal will be to show where the SMTP banner
NO UCE warning is given (thus showing prior notice for CA's
17538.45), and in addition to show that the sender's SMTP server
already reacts to information sent by the receiving SMTP server.
If anyone has ever had to give a talk to a non-technical
audience explaining this, that'd sure give me a hand up in the
creation of my poster. The poster will need to be simple and clear
but still accurate. With the indulgence of the SIMS list I might ask
for comments/suggestions on my attempt sometime in the near future.
Ultimately I will post and GPL the document(s).
Of course this mailing list is archived and indexed and so
spammers are likely to read these posts but I believe the actions
won't be won with stealth/surprise court tactics, just simple
overwhelming evidence and testimony. And thanks to SIMS...these
spammers are soooo busted.

Thank you for your help,

Joe
