Mail Siphon is a great tool, but it only works for accounts that you have
passwords to, since it just POPs into them and lets you manipulate stored
messages via POP3 commands. But if you don't know the password of an account
and you have some administrative need to empty it of stored messages, Mail
Siphon isn't much help. And, yes, I know that admins shouldn't really be doing
such things, but when a user calls and whines about how they can't get
messages because they've let their mailbox get to be huge, sometimes it's just
a heck of a lot easier to open the mailbox file in BBEdit, select all and
delete. Depending on the user, of course -- some of mine actually understand
explanations of things like Mail Siphon. But the ones (users) w/ pointy hair
generally respond with something like, 'Can't you just do it for me?' I've
still got a manager-type at a remote office who I simply _cannot_ convince to
delete messages as soon as he downloads them. His office regularly gets mail
with multiple-MB attachments and he doesn't want to delete them from the
server even after he knows he's got the attachments intact. I've tried to get
him to set Eudora to delete messages after one day, explaining that a mail
server is simply not an appropriate back-up device and he should be making
local back-ups. He seems to understand that, but the shortest time I can get
him to leave messages on the server for is still a week (he used to have it
set for something like 60 days). 8^(
