Sheesh! The problem did end up being DNS related, only on the lookup side.
My ISP distributed config lists with a typo for the primary DNS resolver IP.
All the Macs that had that (non)server as first lookup were timing out.

Which leads me to my next question... The second DNS entry in the TCP/IP
control panels of these machines was a good resolver address. Why would that
second entry not be tried? The machines in question are running System 7.5.5
with OpenTransport 1.1.2

Thanks for the help, it was instrumental in tracing the problem!
