I don't bother with the check before send: With v1.8b8 SIMs does SMTP AUTH. 
On the web interface on the SMTP screen check "Advertize AUTH Capability". 
(I haven't used the Communigator client in years so I can't tell you where 
it is there...)

As far as I can tell the AUTH uses the same account and password 
information as is used for POP access.
