In 1.8b8 I believe you can make the length of the authentication longer in the SMTP settings (10 minutes max I think). And I also think that the ability to authenticate is always on in SIMS so there shouldn't be any settings to make on the server side. Of course these are just guesses so someone with some knowledge would have to back them up!
