I have a client that I need to switch to a new email address and I'm wondering how to
do it gracefully -- with no mail rejections.

I plan to set up a router entry routing the old address to the new account then simply
rename the old account to the new. That way, there's no mail stuck in the old account
-- since the client will get the old account's email the next time she logs in to the
new account.

The problem is that during that short time between when I create a router entry to the
new account, and the time I rename the old account, there's a brief time when mail
might come in for the old account and there is not yet a new account into which it
should go. I'll risk a router error. Or will the mail bounce? Or end up in the queue?

If I rename the account first, then I risk mail to the old account bouncing before I
get the router entry made.

I don't want to create an entirely new account since it could leave mail in the old
account. I've thought of making the new account by copying the old account and
renaming it, but I again risk mail coming into the old account between creation of the
new account and before I get the router entry done.

What's the most graceful way to make the transition to the new account name?

Absent any really clever ideas from you folks, I'll probably open two separate
browsers to SIMS admin and have both the rename and the router updates ready to go
since I can then do the actions just seconds apart and minimize the chances or
bouncing or routing errors.

BTW, the reason we must switch this client to a new email account and phase out the
old one is spam.

She writes: "Also, I continue to receive 8-10 spam emails/day, most of which contain
an 'opt-out' provision, most of which don't work. "

<sigh>
