A few days ago, someone changed the A record for smtp.az.net to a different address --
while the box IP address didn't change. I'm guessing there's still some stale DNS data
out there...

Ah. I'll bet I know. The name server used by smtp.az.net may have been down for a
while. That would explain everything, wouldn't it?
