Actually, the "correct" way would be to use a SMTP probe (even a POP3 
one) this would quite definitely show that SIMS is in fact responding to 
port 25 (and 110).  I believe there are a few solutions out there that 
can do this - I use InterMapper <http://www.InterMapper.com/> an 
expensive;  but, absolutely the best network mapping and monitoring 
software there is.
