Sounds like what you mean by 'auth' is really 'POP before send'? I say that
because, AFAIK, SMTP AUTH doesn't have an 'auth window.' If that's the
case, then the clients need to check their mail (i.e. log on to the server
via POP) within five minutes of attempting to send a message. Also, if this
is what's happening, the iBook user shouldn't need to quit and re-launch
Mail, just check his/her mail before sending a message. If you want the
process to be more convenient, set the clients up to do SMTP AUTH, so that
they authenticate at the beginning of SMTP sessions. That way, they don't
have to remember to check mail first and there's no time window to keep
track of (messages are sent immediately using the same connection that is
being authenticated). I don't know specifically that OE supports SMTP AUTH,
but it should. OS X Mail does support it -- in the 'Account Information'
pane of the prefs for a given mail account, enable the 'Use authentication
when sending mail' check box and enter an appropriate SMTP username and
password below (for SIMS that'll be the same as the POP un/pw).
