The cost of an old mac isn't even an issue here in the least. I've got
more old macs than sense. The reason I'm concerned about using SIMS
longterm is that it and the operating systems it runs in are not likely to
receive timely updates for much longer.

Sure, classic Mac OS has been the most secure operating system as far as
servers are concerned. That by no means indicates that there isn't a
potentially fatal flaw that just hasn't been discovered yet. At what point
in the future will Apple refuse to provide further upgrades to this legacy
system. I think that aside from really damaging issues, we've already
reached that point. OS X has been out for over a year now, why would Apple
devote more than the bare minimum resources to OS 9 any longer?

For that matter, why would Stalker? They've been wonderful in providing as
powerful a product as SIMS for _free_ for all this time but, in the 2
years I've used SIMS, it hasn't progressed past a very stable beta release.
Stalker doesn't have the time or inclination to package together a fresh
1.8 release and provide full documentation, and why would they. SIMS runs
on a legacy operating system and Stalker makes no direct revenue from it.

I think that all the SIMS users that Communigate Pro makes sense for,
costwise at least, have probably upgraded. Those of us asking for another
option from Stalker as simply expressing a desire to be able to continue
to support this fine company. Believe me, if I could justify a full
Communigate Pro license, I'd be there but email just isn't a revenue
generator for us.

That's not to say that I might not end up with 2,000+ accounts in
Communigate Pro at some time in the future, just saying that I'm not there
now and not likely to get there any time soon. If I end up eventually
biting the bullet and switching to one of the open source packages, I'm
not likely to switch again. If there's a reasonably priced Communigate Pro
config that meets my meagre needs, I'd much rather stick with what I know.
