Well, it's possible that your client may return errors with 4xx 
somewhere in it, but this is relating to SMTP errors.

This is my understanding, and likely someone will correct me, so 
don't take what I'm saying as law:

2xx - "OK" - Tells the remote server that things are going as 
planned, the message has been delivered, what have you.
4xx - "Temporary error" - Tells the remote server that something's a 
little screwy right now (i.e. recipient address disk quota filled, 
server's out of disk space, etc.), but they can try again in a little 
bit.
5xx - "Permanent error" - Tells the remote server that whatever they 
did doesn't work, and won't work if they keep trying.
