SIMS 1.8b9d14

A message is being sent to two users at "taconic.net".
Taconic.net is running MessageWall software.

The message fails to send, and the SIMS log contains TWO
error messages:
  00:15:58 3 SMTP [S.0000107263] delayed by taconic.net: 452 MessageWall:
SMTP/TEMPORARY: One recipient per message from external hosts, please\r
  00:15:58 3 SMTP [S.0000107263] delayed by taconic.net: 452 MessageWall:
SMTP/TEMPORARY: One recipient per message from external hosts, please\r
and these messages repeat every 30 minutes, as SIMS does retrys.

So far, so good (or bad, your point of view).

I called taconic.net, and they sighed, yes that's a problem we've
seen with *all* versions of Stalker and also Microsoft Exchange 5.0.
Heck of a bad company to be lumped in with, eh?

Taconic.net suggested that I might try telnetting to their
mail server to see what it is *really* doing, as opposed to
what SIMS is reporting...

telnet a.mx.taconic.net
....
MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
RCPT TO:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
250 MessageWall: OK
RCPT TO:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
452 MessageWall: SMTP/TEMPORARY: One recipient per message from external
hosts, please\r

(you can try this one to see it for yourself)

So, MessageWall at taconic.net is *really* issuing one 250 and one 452
response...it intends to let one recipient through, and have the other one
delayed. SIMS treats this as a (temporary) failure for both recipients
and requeues both for another try later. Ad infinitum, until retry exceeded.

I tried sending a test message to the two recipients through the
DEC/Compaq/HP mail server on a VMS system, and examined the log.
It shows the first one getting through, the second being requeued
and subsequently delivered.

One might argue that MessageWall at taconic.net is simply non-compliant
with the RFC, but taconic.net very reasonably explains that MessageWall
is correctly not accepting responsibility for the second recipient, and
that Stalker should send the data of the message to the first recipient
and retain the responsibility for the second recipient until a retry.

Discussion? Suggestions?
