There is at least one way that 1.7 can be tricked into relaying mail. If you continue to use 1.7 there is a reasonable chance you will end up on an anti-relay RBL.
1.8b8 and up have a few more anti-spam features you probably want: Ability to have more than one RBL to check. And a detector for address harvesting that will help keep you account names out of the spammer's hands.
Is this detector something that I need to configure? I took a look and couldn't find mention of it.
No, there may be ResEdit fiddling possible but I don't believe the web interface or Communigator give you any means of tweaking it. Basically, the anti-harveting protection limits the number of bad addresses that can be tried by a remote machine before it just stops talking to that machine altogether.
