Dear Fellow SIMS users,

I run an online study group, using Macjordomo and SIMS, and I have a particular subscriber that most of the time will receive list traffic just fine, but I occasionally get a message undeliverable. Please note, I changed the list subscriber's real address to <mysubscriber> in this email message to protect their privacy, the rest of the info is from the actual non-delivery message. Can someone explain what the "LDAP" is in layman terms, and perhaps offer some insight on why the message might be getting rejected? Again, this only happens about 10% of the time, the messages usually go through.

LDAP is the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, and it is widely used as means of centralizing user authentication and access control information in one place that many different systems can use. For example, I am currently working in a company where the entire Windows networking domain is replicated into an LDAP server so that their iPlanet webservers can see the same set of users (with the same passwords) as their LAN facilities, and their Unix machines all refer to the same LDAP records to figure out where mail for local users should be forwarded to. One can think of LDAP as roughly the electronic equivalent of one of those big fat multi-section phone directories with yellow pages, residential, business and government sections: a very large database with wide variation in the nature of different records but a well-defined way to find a record if you happen to know enough about it. For example, an LDAP server might allow a mail server to search for a record in the directory branch for an sbcglobal.net user which is associated with the email address 'mysubscriber' to figure out a real delivery point for that user.

Failed to deliver your message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
SMTP: Address rejected by host
Host 'vmh-ext.prodigy.net' says:
451 4.3.5 Error getting LDAP results in map sbcldap:

That indicates a temporary failure of the SBC LDAP server. Note the 4xx 4.y.y response code: it means that the problem is expected to clear up eventually

SIMS bug: it does not understand some cases of 4xx response codes and treats them as if they are permanent.
