at my office, we have a similar setup - mail server sitting behind virus scanning proxy - but in our case, we're protecting a microsoft outlook server from the outside world (tho, in my mind it's the other way round) with a cheap linux box running MailScanner and SpamAssassin. because of a few (i think it was actually *one*) false positive, we've all but disabled the spamassassin config, but the virus scanning mailscanner is still working, and so far it's had no issues to speak of.

the box itself is a castoff pc running redhat linux, so essentially free. the software's all open source and free, too. it updates itself every night with new virus defs, so even with the latest outbreaks, nobody on our side of the scanner even saw an infected message. i didn't configure the machine - it was here when i came on board - but it seems pretty much self-maintaining. if you go with redhat, you can set up up2date to automatically fetch things like security and application updates for you, but that service costs $60/year from redhat, i think.

anyhoo, good luck!

Because we needed virus protection, we purchased the Webshield
E250 appliance form McAfee/NAI, but still use SIMS as the POP
and SMTP server where the E250 forwards all scanned mail to.
...
We are now looking for an alternative. I would rather
spend money on a new mailserver with integrated virus
scanning that works... We have about 170 mailboxes.
