I was under the impression that in AOL, it would send plain text IF and 
ONLY IF, you reset your mail font and style prefs to "default" and then 
touched NOTHING on the settings. If you altered something, even it you 
set it back to the way it was, it then sent as HTML. But if you go back 
and reclick the "default" option, it would go back to plain text.

Of course, it has been so long since I've actually used the AOL client, 
that I can't confirm this to be true. It was just what I had heard.
