This has never been true -- sendmail for a very long time has allowed addresses of the form "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", which most of these "checkers" will reject as "invalid".
and let me tell you, it is bloody annoying.
I created an email address at one time that was
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (no longer use that, I just stopped using webforms that won't accept + addresses).
Then there are the ones that restrict the username portion to 8 characters. Wee fun.
The Internet is a wonderful place, filled with morons who are being paid money to break things.
Sigh.
