I guess you have not much choice here, people happen to use whatever their distro brings in. I mean, likely the developer bringing in this warning had an idea on how people should fix their stuff. This %-type wildcard is described on the GNU make web page as being compatible with almost every other flavour of make, so a warning about this is a bit surprising.
