Follow-up Comment #6, bug #40559 (project simulavr):
If pattern rules are okay,
it should be a matter of ensuring that no target matches two rules.
To that end, it should be sufficient to ensure that gcc and avr-gcc sources
are not in the same directory.
On the subject of autotools, if all else fails,
we might want to include them along with the simulator.
