Russian analyst says US causing terrorists to unite
MOSCOW, October 11 (Itar-Tass) -- The United States is in fact
pushing
terrorists in various countries, from Saudi Arabia to the Caucasus, into
each other's arms, helping them unite and step up action, a high-ranking
Russian foreign policy expert told Tass Friday.
As a recent example of consolidation of radical Islamic groups he
pointed to the congress in Travnik, Bosnia-Herzegovina, of some 150
delegates from over 50 countries.
"That congress was held on the ideological platform of struggle
against the Christian world, North-South confrontation, and intolerance
between the two civilizations," the expert said.
The congress formulated arguments to declare a war on the Caucasian
race with the use of all conceivable means and methods - both legal and
illegal.
The congress of Islamic groups in Travnik decided that in the face of
a common threat differences must be neglected in order to pool efforts
to
direct the spear of the counterattack against the United States and
their
allies. The venue for the congress was chosen for a good reason, the
analyst said. It was held against a backdrop of elections in
Bosnia-Herzegovina. Early returns from the elections heralded changes to
the political landscape in that country, where nationalist parties,
including Islamic ones, have gained a stronger foothold, the analyst
said.
He does not rule out "more outbreaks of Islamic fundamentalism, as
the
congress considered ways of proliferation of Islam in Europe."
In Iraq, both Sunni and Shiite extremists have been increasingly
active.
"Islamic extremists there have for the first time in many years
openly
come out against Christian communities and been attacking their
representatives.
"The theme of the U.S. military threat has been used with great
skill.
The extremists have been saying the West is launching a crusade against
the Muslim world. This puts strong psychological pressure on Moslem
believers," the analyst said.
Demonstrations by Muslim fanatics have been used to direct believers'
anger against Saddam Hussein's secular regime, which allegedly abuses
sharia laws.
"Islamic extremists are readily using Washington's adventuristic
policies to erode the secular regime in Baghdad from within," the
analyst
said.
