Meh, I should have predicted that... here's another case where an
intelligent being fails to predict the rather obvious actions of other
intelligent beings :) - suffice it to say that I was taking the piss,
and not making any attempt whatsoever to define necessary conditions
for consciousness or self-direction. (And to repeat again, I think
such a definition is quite impossible.)
Given that you don't seem to accept elementary forms of consciousness,
that's true. To me consciousness of self means that the entity is able
to detect it's on state, and being self-willed means that it is able to
TRY to act in a method in harmony with it's goals as a result of that
awareness. I'll grant you that this means I've got to accept that
mosquitoes are conscious and self willed at an elementary level...but
then I *do* accept that. To me is seems that there is a (relatively)
smooth gradient in awareness and consciousness. And that being self
willed is visibly displaying the results of actions based on that awareness.
