This is a case of logic conflicting with instinct.  You can only transfer
consciousness if you kill the original.  You can do it neuron by neuron, or
all at once.  Either way, the original won't notice, will it?

If you don't destroy the original, then subjectively it would be like
a transporter that only works half the time. The only frightening
thing about it would be if you somehow came into conflict with your
copy.
