Hi, comments inline...

Hello All,

I am about to add DTMF tones to our SIP Bulk call generator and, because of
speed and compatibility issues, I am looking for feedback on how most SIP
product designers have gone about implementing this. From what I have
gathered, RFC 2833 is specifically geared toward DTMF tones embedded in the
RTP media stream which is my least preferred way of going about this. I
have noticed that some people have discussed using the INFO method to carry
DTMF tones but have not seen an example of how this is accomplished. I have
also been told that it can be accomplished in the SDP payload but cannot
find any reference to it in RFC 2327.

What can be accomplished in SDP is the declaration that DTMF using RFC2833 will be present in a media stream. Based on its specification, one example of SDP media stream attributes for this follows.

m=audio 24540 RTP/AVP 0 97
a=rtpmap:0 PCMU/8000

a=rtpmap:97 telephone-event
a=fmtp:97 0-15,16

Although proposals have been made within the IETF to standardize a means to carry DTMF indications in INFOs, they have all been abandoned by the community due to various problems.

Does anyone out there have any examples of the latter two methods that they
would be willing to share?
Does anyone have any opinions/arguments as to what is the best way to
implement this?

The only IETF standard for this is RFC2833. There is ongoing work to define a mechanism to support user interaction with SIP-based applications. However, those mechanisms won't be something that a bulk call generator would support IMHO, as they will only be indicated in SIP and not actually use SIP for anything else. See http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-rosenberg-sipping-markup-00.txt for some idea of the direction on this.

Best regards,
Bert

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance and best regards to all who respond!
