In theory, any URI that ultimately routes to the UA is acceptable. (In some cases, the URI need not even do that, if the caller never receives calls on the UA.) The question to be answered is "What URI identifies (in the human sense) the caller?" In most cases, the best answer is an AOR which the UA registers -- each registration creates a "line appearance" on the UA's user interface, and the user selects which line appearance he wants to use as his identity for that call.
