CGP is an integrated solution, not a single application, built for a specific use case. It is practically what Sipwise SIP:Provider platform is, using Kamailio for SIP routing and other components to complete the solution.
From your reply I think you mix design and implementation of a VoIP system with operating a VoIP system. Something like why your neighbor housewise has to understand mechanics, electronics and so on to build a car since she want to drive it and she has a driver license. Well, nobody demands that. There are others building cars, she just has to pay the producer to get it fully operational. To answer you directly now: yes, you need to know SIP properly if you use Kamailio - SER to build a VoIP system for large number of phone lines. Likewise the CGP engineers knew SIP to build it. You don't need that if you just operate it - install with default config file, then update the details specific to your environment (like db connection, ip addresses, enable the features provided there that you want to have), and that's it, you are ready to go. Just use our CLIs, kamctl and sercmd, to operate the system, you don't need to know the reply for max-forward - it is there, in the default config, handled properly, does not need any touch. Overall it looks like you want to build a telephony system without knowing the technology -- sorry, it is not possible here, like everywhere else. Do you think the airplanes are built by pilots?
