I'm biased, but I usually answer that question in this way:
1) We have about 100 testing stations running SIPP (PCs running Linux),
how much would that cost with the commercial product. (Most commercial
products are trying to sell systems for 100K while a Linux costs me 1K.)
2) Most commercial systems say "you can write whatever tests you want";
we already have about 5000 test scripts for our product. How many do they
have for testing gateways?
3) For SIP messages, a Linux can do about 1000 messages per second. I
don't often need more, but we do run tests with multiple Linux systems
generating the traffic.
The only areas where I find Linux limiting are media generation and multiple
IP addresses. For high rate media tests we get media generation done by one
of our own cards with call information supplied by SIPP (to get 2G of media
per card used) and I have written Linux program that can emulate 250K IP
addresses behind a router.

Subject: [Sipp-users] SIPp Performance - High-Score?
Hi all!
Just had a (awkward) discussion with a representative of a commercial
SIP-testing - solution about the performance of SIPp.
Now I am wondering about Your experiences for the maximum measured
cps-rate of a 'usual' INVITE-scenario - just for statistics. I'm not
curious about the performance - or the type - of the SUT, but just the
current "cps - high-score", You ever archived with SIPp.
I think, this fact would also be useful for the wiki,
thanks in advance and BR
Michael
