Try to put: export TERM=vt100 in the beginning of your bash script..
Don't know why, but this did the trick for me...

Ronnie,
this script is one part of a larger scripts that should test a SIP
application (see if its a live ) and send an email when it stops
responding, the scrip should run as a cron job which means as a
background script.
