YOU STUPID GIT? ISN'T IT OBVIOUS? (Is that angry enough?) The reason is it is "hard" to determine the IP address of the machine (espcially in a multi-homed siutation). So it is better to do all that work once (and possibly via human input) than to have every service do it and possibly get it wrong.
