I like the symmetry of this idea.

The general purpose of Group Paging and group chat is notification.
'Group notifications' triggered via IM, could be enhanced to
automatically find the best means to notify a person within a group (IM
or page) based on IM presence/BLF status (text-to -speech would be
required as Ranga mentions). A default notification preference would
select the preferred method of notification.

Group defintiion for specific kinds of notifications could be based on
emergency response teams, project teams, functional groups, etc. and
therefore may include groups in addition to those defined as Paging
Groups.

Re-purposing Paging groups as a special IM buddy group is a great start.

functionality

        Hi,
I was thinking of ways to more tightly integrate our openfire
server
with sipXecs and I got an idea that I would like to share with
the list
        for feedback.

SipXecs has the concept of paging groups which defines a set of
users
that will receive a paging announcement. We could mirror the
paging
groups in openfire in the following way. Every paging group
defined in
sipXecs could appear as a buddy in a user's IM client (all
paging groups
could be placed in a special 'Paging Groups' IM buddy group).
Whenever
a user wants to send an 'IM page' to the members of paging group
XYZ, it
simply sends an IM to its XYZ paging group buddy. The openifre
plug-in
will see to it that all members of the paging group with IM
accounts
        receive the notification.

Is this something that is worth tracking as a future
enhancement? Any
ideas on how to improve this idea?

I like it. Seems like a nice feature. Of course, one can think of
enhancements such as ringing the phone associated with the user if the
presence status of the user indicates he is "away".

In the fullness of time we could even text-to-speech the 'IM
page' to
the SIP phones belonging to the paging group...

        Cheers,
        bob
