yes, this is exactly what i want. in fact is there a programmatic and
clean way for and admin to add an alias?   Using the externals users
file is a bit clumsy (if that still exists), phantom users seems
clumsy too.  i just thought i was missing something obvious in the
dial plan config ui

Hmmm, I forget exactly what formats you can enter into the dial plan rules.  I 
know the mappingrules XML format can express such a mapping, but maybe you 
can't enter it in the dial plan UI.

But you should be able to enter it as a user-forwarding entry.
