Scott,
1. I am doing the yum update and it made it to 125/172 on the download.
Then it is trying to open these websites and I get these errors:
http://mirror.trouble-freeze.net/centos/5.2/updates/i386/RPMS/ruby-irb-1.8.5-5.e15_2.6.i386.rpm:
[Errno 12] Timeout: <urlopen error timed out>
Trying other mirror
Then it keep on trying other mirrors.
2. On the second machine I am updating I do the export then the wget command
and I get this error
Resolving proxy..........failed: Name or service not known.

use 'http://proxy-usa1.enterasys.com' (you don't need the ':80').
wget will work with that as the environment variable http_proxy, and
then you'll have to put that into your yum.conf file as I described
earlier.
