You don't need to be on your own subnet, but you do need to arrange for your server to get a stable IP address - it's ok if it gets that address from DHCP (as long as you don't mind the fact that if your system reboots when DHCP is not available, it won't work...), but you have to be able to tell the configuration what that IP address is going to be.
