really?  that is news to me, as i have 7960's working just fine on
netgear, dell, and adtran switches.

i'm guessing you are referring to cdp, which is a protocol often
supported by third-party vendors (netgear, for one) (a colleague once
characterized it as "cisco destroy phone"), or pre-standard poe, which
is more expensive to pull off but also supported by other vendors
(netgear has made a few switches that support it and adtran makes
one).  but neither is critical to the functioning of a cisco ip phone.

rikard: my only contribution to your topic is... did you remember to
send profile?  that happens to me all the time when i'm provisioning
phones =)
