I hope someone can help me troubleshoot a problem I am having on a new sipX
server. I have a good bit of experience administering Microsoft OS¹s, but I
am only now getting up to speed on Linux. The problem I am having right now
seems a little trivial, but I cannot see why it is occurring.

I have a single sipX server setup on the Internet with an Internet address.
It does not host either DNS or DHCP, but I have created the following DNS
records pointing to the server¹s address:

sipx.domain.com A 74.xxx.xxx.xxx
_sip._tcp.rr.sipx.domain.com SRV 0 5070 sipx.domain.com
_sip._tcp.domain.com SRV 0 5070 sipx.domain.com
_sip._udp.domain.com SRV 0 5070 sipx.domain.com
_sips._tcp.domain.com SRV 0 5070 sipx.domain.com

I am not able to create NAPTR records with my service.

I am using soft phones, specifically X-Lite, for my testing. My plans are to
write SIP clients which can be used in a distance learning environment, so I
will have no need (at least for now) of any physical IP phones.

For my first user I renamed the superadmin to ³9999.² Another user is
created named ³8888.² Both accounts are in the administrators group, and are
identical in nearly every respect as far as I can tell.

X-lite has been installed on both a Mac computer, and a Vista computer. The
Mac copy is configured to register with the server using 9999, and the Vista
copy has been configured to register using 8888. Both computers are behind a
Linksys router and have private DHCP addresses. Both soft phones are able to
successfully register with the server.

The problem manifests itself with the 9999 phone calls the 8888 phone. It
appears that the 8888 extension answers the call automatically, and then
immediately hangs up. It does this whether 8888 is registered with the
server or not. But when 8888 calls 9999 the 9999 phone rings until it is
answered, or until it times out.

I¹m not sure why this is happening. Do you have any ideas, or can you point
me to a log file that might give me a clue as to the problem?

If you can help me understand what is happening, I would be very grateful.

Thanks!
