Stability is determined by the *second* number in the designation, so
3.6.8 is stable.  In general, 3.x.y (for x even) is derived from 3.x.0,
which is derived from 3.x-1.  The next unstable version, 3.x+1, is
derived from 3.x-1, although almost all the changes between 3.x.0 and
3.x.y will be ported into 3.x+1.
