I too can't wait for 4.2's new voice mail system.. I have one extension that the mailbox needed customization. The rest of the mailboxes needed to use the default template.
I was able to get it working by first setting up the personal autoattendant on the custom extension with a dummy rule that got removed later. Then I edited savemessage.xml and made the customizations. I found that if the personal autoattendant with a dummy entry wasn't configured first, sipx would always try to overwrite savemesage.xml when ever there was a modification to any extension.
