If the hot spot is blocking ports, there's probably not a good workaround.

I find that some wifi hotspots (Panera Bread) block a lot of rather plain
websites. Other block known ports for VPN connections (Kinko's) and even
other block things like VOIP/SIP. I've never experienced a hot spot that
allows me to do what I need to do all of the time. Others us a proxy service
that delays the transport of media in favor of other well known protocols to
give them priority. Welcome to the Internet.

I don't know of any commercial VOIP provider who can claim network usability
100% in a hotspot environment, it gets kinda hostile depending on the
attitude of the gatekeeper in each hotspot environment.

If your expectation is being set that it will always connect no matter what
from hotspots, I think your expectations are too high, because I don't think
it's realistic, but that's me.

Alternatively, a STUN server might assist in getting reigistered, but still
the hotspot/proxy manager can still "favor" other well known
protocols/ports. Once running through STUN, your RTP might change, and might
become (or stay) unknown so they don't get a high priority.
