I do notice from my perspective that mailing lists put every post "in your face" whereas you can ignore forum topics that don't interest you. Also, most forums don't display well on mobile devices. Forums would help gather a wider audience, but mailing lists tend to keep out the PHB's that know nothing about computers from wasting everyone's time as they are less friendly to non-techies. I prefer forums to mailing lists simply because, without mail filtering, my inbox becomes unmanageable. GMail doesn't provide a decent method of "moving" messages out of site from the inbox, only "tagging" them so I have to use my work email.
