Unless you do that, you can't tell whether calls ever got to the system
or not.

The log line you quoted was a timeout response to a REGISTER request.
There isn't enough in it to see what was wrong with the request itself.

No... phones don't need host names at all, but they should always refer
to the service using the domain name.
