Its how sipx is able to tell whether a phone is remote or not based on
hether it falls in the subnet(s).

No issues, just wanting to better understand this part.
Are you saying that everything to do with sipx should be in the same subnet,
as in /24 or that a /16 is fine so long as all other devices are as well. I
mean, I know that what ever I want talking together needs to be in the same
net but was wondering if sipx might have a preference over wanting things to
be in a /24.
