I believe that when I entered the IMAP Account as just "norman"
and entered my (non-obfusctated!) password the list of voicemail 
messages changed.
As mentioned, I am receiving the email notification containing the WAV file.
But every message is accompanied with a request to update my password.

How does sipXecs know which IMAP server to contact?
Does it consult my DNS for my MX record?
(I don't recall entering my mail server in the sipXecs configuration.)
Or is my "IMAP Account" supposed to be "[email protected]"?
