It’s a common mistake for people to think that they don’t need DNS servers
because they are local to the sipXecs server. DNS is an extremely important
facet of the installation, and the most misunderstood part of the equation.

DNS is essential to it working. If you configure for an external DNS, and not
the integrated DNS, then as Tony has mentioned, you will need to ensure your
DNS server is set up with the domain name, as well as all of the SRV records
required. There is extensive information on the wiki covering this topic in
detail.

Dears,

I installed SipXecs version 4.2 using the ISO CD
the installation process was really a breeze
nice and easy.
my test is local, so i don't need DNS servers (although i have configured my
hostname on the company's DNS server).
and my PC is connected directly to the SipX server (back to back), and i also
tested through a DSL connection.
like I said I want to test it, and get to know it better, so i can install for
my company.

I’m trying to register my sip account using Xlite also using a Cisco SPA2102
(from a DSL line – remote user)
but I keep getting "Registration error 408 - timeout"

i did a capture with wireshark

(Session Initiation Protocol
Status-Line: SIP/2.0 100 Trying
Status-Code: 100
Resent Packet: False)

and after that i get the following:

(Status-Line: SIP/2.0 408 Request timeout
Status-Code: 408
Resent Packet: False)

the error doesn't change even when I enter the wrong password for the user, so
my guess is the issue might be related to user credentials.
as I understood from the documentation, the server is standalone and I don't
need additional software to get it working.

so basically I have the server set up and the laptop connected directly to it
,and the Xlite won't connect.

can you help me with that issue, or send me the latest documentation related to
v4.2 to see if I’m missing something.

thanks,

Nalbi
