I think what we've all taken from this, and should always remember, is that
resources (RAM/CPU) and storage (amount, read/write latency) is very key
with ANY sip based platform, especially when using it to test the media
services against, as they tend to be more sensitive. Just because the media
server moved to FS in 4.2, it doesn't mean the resources can be diminished
or not allocated properly.

Whether 32 or 64 bit for very small production (10-15 users) or testing
purposes, the following should hold true:

1-2 CPU, 2-4GB RAM, disk size (almost any, 20GB minimum suggested for very
basic testing).

If it is a laptop running windows, perhaps the easiest way to go (I have one
I carry with a demo on it) is vmware, running a ISO installed sipx system
(network in bridged mode).

I have a production system for the next two weeks residing on VMWARE with
120GB disk space allocated and 2GB RAM allocated. The startup is slow to
register phones (java eats the CPU for a good while at startup), but it
works for weeks on end. I have also run sipxecs in demo mode on a macbook
with vmware fusion. I imagine you could with parallels for MAC, but they
were always slower to support other hardware when I had their linux version.
The reviews for their mac software is pretty darn good though I have never
tried.

I imagine all the virtualization products out there are useable. Not all are
the same. There is a difference between paravirtualization (like xen) and
full virtualization (like vmware). I have used both but always found vmware
easier to dive into.

Here's a great cheat sheet to reference when running virtualization on a
linux host system.

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-linuxvirt/index.html

If you can dedicate a machine and will be sole purpose for just running up
to a few virtual guests at a time, I might suggest using the vmware esxi
bare metal hypervisor. If you don't expect to spend much time on it and just
want to see how hard it is to use, then take a spare Windows PC and load
vmware server 2.0 on it and get started. It's not that hard.

Just be sure, however you roll it out, that you do not overtax the CPU or
RAM resources of the host machine (lest yee have grievances and no recourse
except to kick thyself for it).

Have fun!
