http://oreka.sourceforge.net/ can be used as well but it records everything.

    every settings should be available to you.  that is a (sometimes
    debated) beauty of the phone configuration system.

    the current recommended firmware AFAIK is
     3.1.3c split
     4.1.4 bootrom
