I agree with Tony's suggestion.
In a perfect world it could be something like the upgrade process of
Infoblox's if anybody knows these boxes.
You load the new firmware onto the master box, the master box distributes
it to all its slaves.
After this is done you can do an apply test to see whether the configs
will migrate without errors as well.
Then you pick a (scheduled or not) time to reboot with the new settings.
The master reboots it's slaves and himself.
Job done.
If all works well continue working, if not reboot with previous firmware
(partition).
