There was definitely a big point made about being able to restore backups from
a post 4.2 environment forward...

Having to re-install every time there is a major version change was/is a huge
hassle - it definitely keeps folks at bay from using some of the newer features
- I know I was hesitant moving from 3.10 <=> 4.0 <=> 4.2 because I essentially
had to export all the users and remember the various passwords for itsps -
etc... it's not difficult - but getting a production system back up and running
asap is important. If I can go from 2 hours to 10 minutes of down
time...that's huge. I would imagine that folks that have this in production
need an easy way to get current. Unfortunately, being a geek, I always want
the latest and greatest...

-------------
as far as backing up an older version and restoring onto a newer one, yes, that
*used* to be discouraged, but I think the policy changed on that at some point.
 Can anyone confirm that? The only problem is that the hostname, certs and ip
address all gets restored so it's PITA to use IMHO.
