I've been reading a lot of search results and haven't found any way to
do this yet. Yes, I understand that using numeric User ID's is
preferred, but we're not doing that.

This is on sipXecs 4.2.1 stable. A user is defined with alpha only, e.g.
johndoe. The User's Caller ID is set to 9195551212.

There is no configuration for Caller ID on the gateways, we just pass
through the User's Caller ID. (We do *not* want a single Caller ID per
gateway, we need to send the User's.)

Calls are routed to an unmanaged gateway which is a Cisco 3845 ISR
running IOS 12.4, which has PRI interface to the PSTN.

tcpdump on sipXecs for an outbound call shows FROM as
sip:johndoe@sipXecs. The Cisco router sees the incoming Caller ID as
johndoe, which is obviously not valid for PSTN, so the Caller ID
defaults to the BTN.

I've tried numerous permutations of Caller ID options on sipX and cannot
get it to set the FROM header to anything other than User ID. is there
any way to make this work?

(I can provide pcaps and router debugs and more sipX info if it'll help.)
