You can also integrate that phonebook with your non-VoIP phones as well 
(assuming sipXecs is connected to a legacy pbx via a gateway).  For example, 
our legacy pbx users go to the webpage and a click initiates a call to their 
NEC phone - when picked up - initiates the 2nd leg of the call.

So taking Tony's point even farther - you are no longer limited to utilizing 
voip phones - but can extend it to cell phones/home phones/etc.

and depending upon the phone, you could always make a corporate directory from 
a hosted service internal or not using x html and the like.

at least with a web hosted directory the phones are somewhat agnostic and 
unaffected by changes. they are also not limited by licensing , memory, 
depending upon the way you deploy it coma brand, model, or screen size.
