I know many have had better luck with the 84xx series using the 3.3 firmware.
After you look at the costs, the smartphone might (or might not) make more sense depending upon your application. I find for very basic use, the free 3cx phone works well enough in the ios devices (or csipsimple for android) to give you a good enough feel for whether your wifi environment is laid out in a way that gives you coverage. At the same time, the bria app is getting better, with video up and coming... the spectralinks dont offer video options (if that matters to you).
